Food Shots With New Lens
I finally splurged on a lens that has little to do with my architectural photography. The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm is just incredible. I’ve been messing around with food photography ideas with the 60mm micro and it really didn’t have the focal length or compression I wanted. I’m considering this my personal work lens and love it because it’s total opposite of the wide angles I have to use with architecture. A good visual exercise using a different lens on a different subject.
Here are some shots I did of raw and cooked mussels. I also tested the VR feature with hand held shots of salmon sizzling in a pan after it was removed from the oven. The best part about photographing real food is the enjoyment of eating it afterward. I can get used to this.

Raw Mussels

Salmon

Love the salmon shot. Great color with the caramelized crust and the salmon. I used to use a 50mm for food but went with the Sigma 105mm for the same reasons you mentioned, about half the price of the Nikon but still a pretty good lens. The Nikon 105 is on my wish list for Xmas.

Thanks for the comment! I just checked out your blog and I really enjoy it. It’s now bookmarked with food websites I like.
Best,

Great stuff! I love the shot of the mussels. I used to shoot with a 105 on my old F3 many years ago. Loved it then and from your shots this one looks great too. Excellent detail.
Thanks for the comment. I used the older Nikon 105mm lenses and they all are great. This new one with VR is a lot bigger though with some nice improvements.
Best,

I’m drooling over the mussels. I’m a chef and VERY amateur photographer with my food. I hire experts for that stuff! Thanks for following the bistro on Twitter. Keep the delicious food shots coming. I look forward to more.

Thanks for the comment. I’m still experimenting with food photography since architectural photography is what I make a living at. It getting there!
